Hear My Prayer!
I saw the Borat picture this weekend. I need to visit an Evangelical church. Not to mock, but seriously, just to witness it. Hopefully, this character will not be preaching. Though that might be interesting as well. So, who knows of an authentic Evangelical church along the Wasatch Front?
The Pet Shop Boys concert was really good on Friday night. Tickets were only $10.19 thanks to a radio promotion, and the crowd was surprisingly sparse - which meant good seats for everyone.
Chunk from The Goonies is probably one of my favourite film characters. Of. All. Time.

Oh gosh, seriously, that scene was something else.
There is little agreement in Christian circles as to what "evangelical" means. The word dates back to the 1800s. These days it is often used synonymously with "republican" and "conservative." If you are looking for that kind of evangelical church to observe and don't want to drive to Colorado Springs, probably Calvary Chapel comes close.
The simplest definition of "evangelical" just means "keeping with the gospel and its teachings" which can mean just about anything in this country. There are Catholic and Episopal churches who use the word "evangelical" to describe the way they view the bible. The word has become overburdened with political and cultural meaning that doesn't have much to do with the bible.
BTW, the church in Borat was Pentecostal, which is entirely different thing. Basically it's a style of worship emphasizing the free movement of the holy spirit as exhibited in the chaos of the dancing and speaking in tongues and people falling down "in the spirit" and stuff.
If you want to come to a pretty authentic church that is not authentically any one particular thing or cultural phenomena but just regular people who share a faith, come check out New Song! The choir is singing this Sunday and we are going to be awesome.
Did your recent trip to London inspire you to write "favorite" as "favourite." If so....awesome. I came back from a 6-month stay in New Zealand with a bit of an accent.
Pentecostal! That's what I'm looking for. New Song sounds a little tame in comparison to TALKING IN TONGUES.
I think there's a church on 7th E/1100 S where you might catch some tongues'o'fire. Capital Christian, I think? It's Assemblies of God, though, which is a branch of Pentecostal that's a bit milder, at least in these parts. We visited there when we first moved here. A little too bouncy for me. They get so worked up that there's a coffee break between the singing and the sermon so that you can re-energize yourself. But still probably nothing like you get in the south. Definitely no snake handling.
(I realize your blog entries aren't invitations to write essays...sorry)
