So what is

the significance of this balloon? It was featured in a key John Adams
scene. But I have no idea why it is such a big deal. I know, I know
Google is my friend, but so are you. Help me out.

Okay, I helped myself (long deposition). 1783, first non-tethered balloon flight, France, King Louis XIV, Montgolfiers brothers, balloon is now in London museum. Anyway, pretty LV picture.
